Crossing State Lines

There are several approaches to legally serve clients/patients across state lines. One is to establish a policy to only accept patients/clients in states where the provider is licensed and refer to other online providers. Some providers elect to become licensed in a few states to expand their reach or to serve a consistent referral source. Keep in mind that each state and profession has different requirements for practicing telebehavioral health, as well as different consents, duty to warn, duty to protect, etc. It is advisable to check with the state license board, where both the provider and the patient/client are located to learn the terminology used and practice requirements, prior to providing telebehavioral health or telemental health treatment.
